Unimportant content
[edit]The section about the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association isn't wrong but it isn't that important. It is an example of a community network that was used to represent clans and associations (who became members in the network through paying dues). The Chinese Benevolent Associations largely served as a tool to interact with white society by consolidating some type of "Chinese voice" but they were not the main source of support and community for the pioneer Chinese. Instead, reading about clan associations are more useful to learn about community structures and life before and during the Exclusion Era. Prioritizing organizations that interact with white society rather than the community structures that were actually at the heart of Chinese life in Canada seems like the wrong choice, and given that I've added a section on the clan associations, I don't feel like it's necessary to have both on this page since Wikipedia pages are meant to be succinct. - @CanadaGorl: Also, why not both? Your section on clan associations is useful information -- thank you for it. But why exclude the information on the CCBA? Even if they were not the "main source of support and community", they played a part in the history of Chinese immigration into Canada, and it doesn't make sense to remove the information. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:07, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
- They discuss the CCBA the footnotes on page 4 of this paper (https://doi.org/10.14288/bcs.v0i27.839). We definitely could keep it but part of Wikipedia's ethos is keeping pages concise ("A Wikipedia article should not be a complete exposition of all possible details, but a summary of accepted knowledge regarding its subject." -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#cite_note-1) so I felt that it would be appropriate to remove that section given the addition of the clan associations section. CanadaGorl (talk) 05:49, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
- @CanadaGorl: The CCBA may be a footnote in one paper, but that does not mean they are a footnote in all historical records. I recommend leaving the information about the CCBA intact, while also keeping your new information about the clan associations. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 23:08, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
